Fragrance Oils ~ VS ~ Essential Oils
What are they ? What's the Difference ?
Here at Bath and Body by Tracy we offer both “Synthetic Fragrance Oils” as well as pure “Essential Oils”. On my "scent page" I have a list of all that we have on hand in the essential oils, fragrances and flavors. They may not all be listed on the scent drop downs for a particular product. If you need one that is not list, please select “custom scent”. Then you need to email me and tell me the exact scent oil you do want me to use. Also, I have taken the time to research on the net to find you some helpful info. Below is some info I found to help define and explain the differences between the types of scenting oils. Thanks, Tracy
The difference between a fragrance oil and an essential oil is important to understand. A true essential oil comes from a plant (stems, leaves, flowers, buds etc.) and has certain properties that can help with health concerns or act as anti-bacterial agents or in other beneficial ways. A fragrance oil is synthetically created ( Man-Made ) in a laboratory and does not have beneficial properties other than smelling good.
The quality of both essential and fragrance oils vary widely based on many factors, and also vary widely in cost. Here at Bath and Body by Tracy, we only use the very very best, I assure you. Each oil we carry has been specially selected and tested for strength, throw, and good smell. Both types of oils are safe though many people are allergic to synthetic fragrance. People can also be allergic to essential oils. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, you should always test a new product on a small part of skin before applying it to your whole body. Of course if you really want to be safe, order Fragrance Free. I have made it a point to offer almost every product I carry in Fragrance Free.
In most cases, many customers prefer the strong scent of a synthetic fragrance or the type of scent that can only be made synthetically (honeydew melon, for example). Typically, there are not berry-scents available in essential oil, nor are scents like apple pie or chocolate cake. You might also notice that we carry a lot of Designer Duplicates and popular Store Brand type duplicate fragrances.
There are some cases when it is is not cost effective to use an essential oil, or it is not eco-friendly to do so. One example is and Rose Essential Oil. It takes 10,000 pounds of rose petals to make an ounce of essential oil. The cost of true rose essential oil is astronomical compared to synthetic rose fragrance oil (but some healing properties are lost when using synthetic oils). We do not offer Rose Essential Oil.
Candles are made with fragrance oil. The flash point of an essential oil is different than a synthetic oil and the scent tends to burn off before the candle has melted. The end result of essential oil in candles is a poor smelling candle.
If you would like to learn more about essential oils, try a simple google search on "essential oil" or "aromatherapy". Additionally, there are many books written on the subject and likely available at your local library.
Flavor Fragrance Oils ~ VS ~ "
Taste Enhanced
" Flavor Oils
What are they ? What's the Difference ?
Traditional "Flavor Fragrances" have a strong aroma which TRICK the BRAIN into thinking the scent of a sweetened lip product is an actual flavor. Normally the only way to get actual "FLAVOR" in a lip balm or gloss was to use an "Essential Oil" in combination with a sweetener. Examples of Essential Oils: Lemon, Lime, Tangerine, Spearmint, Peppermint, etc. (see my full list on the SCENT Page).
Our NEW "Taste Enhanced" Flavors have an actual taste and are used in the food industry to enhance the flavors of products such as soda pop and ice cream. Extensive testing has shown that when these "Taste Enhanced Flavors" are used in conjunction with a sweetened lip base, a superior lip balm/gloss is produced.
Just recently, the flavor oil suppliers have had these new Enhanced formulas released to the public. These new oils will work in lip products, as well as, edible body products. Sadly, there are only a few available so far. As soon as I can afford it, I will try to replace any of my current flavor oils with the new ones, as the old flavors are used up.
